Ovulation Disorder

Ovulation disorder include the followings:

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects 5-10% of women of childbearing age. PCOS is associated with: irregular menstrual cycles and anovulation (no ovulation), abnormal hair growth or loss, abdominal obesity, elevated insulin levels, elevated testosterone levels (which has a negative effect on egg quality), polycystic ovaries, dark patches of velvety skin on neck, arms, breasts or thighs, acne, and infertility. Studies have shown that both Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture can improve menstrual frequency, induce ovulation and reduce androgen levels therefore improving egg quality. Some studies have shown positive results in inducing ovulation and menstruation and lowering androgen levels in women with PCOS.

Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)

Premature ovarian failure is the loss of ovarian function and estrogen production in women under the age of 40. POF has a negative impact on fertility, but also lack of estrogen can cause other health issues such as increase cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis and many other health issues. Approximately, 1 in every 1000 women between the ages of 15-29 and 1 in every 100 women between the ages 30-39 are affected. Although the cause of POF is not known, one theory suggest that these patients have less than normal amount of follicles and/or loss follicles at a higher rate than average, another theory suggest that POF could be an autoimmune problem where body’s defense system attach ovaries causing higher follicular loss.

POF is often called premature menopause; although the symptoms may be similar, the conditions are quite different. Natural menopause occurs in late 40s to early 50s when women start having irregular menstruation and eventually the cessation of menstruation. Women with POF have irregular menstruation they may skip their period for a few months and then have a normal cycle for a few months. Other symptoms of OPF include, hot flashes or night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of energy, diminished libido, painful intercourse and bladder control problems. Women with POF have elevated FSH level ( >40 mlU/ml), but some of these women continue to ovulate and have the capability to achieve pregnancy.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been shown to be effective at treating the symptoms associated with POF, such as elevated FSH, night sweats, vaginal dryness and insomnia, and deficient uterine lining. If you have been diagnosed with POF, acupuncture and Chinese medicine may offer a natural, safe, and effective option.
